More Identity Theft Solutions

Sunday, April 22, 2007

Author: Gerri Stone

Identity theft is on the increase. It is one of the more serious threats to internet users today. Keeping your internet security software updated, and following these common sense identity theft solutions will help you reduce the threat and keep you safe online.

1. Beware of any email attachments that you receive. If you don't know the sender, don't open the email. If it is from a friend or colleague, contact them to be sure they intended to send it to you. Before opening any attachment or program on your computer, be sure to run a complete virus scan first.

2. If you are downloading programs, music or videos online, be sure the website is genuine and safe. Spy ware could be lurking in the download, waiting for you to open it, so it can send your personal information into cyberspace.

3. Don't enter contests, giveaways, or websites that ask for your personal information or credit card information for access. A simple search on the internet will tell you if the contest or offer is legitimate. Usually they aren't.

4. Don't reply to emails that ask for your social security number or your credit card information. Most reputable companies will not request this type of information by email. If you are in doubt, contact the company by phone to verify that they want this information.

5. Change the passwords on your computer programs at least every three months, and try to use a combination of letters and numbers that is at least eight characters long. Don't use birthdays, addresses, or your dog's name.

6. Be careful on social networking sites. It is becoming common for scammers to befriend people online to obtain their personal information for fraudulent use.

7. Get the best antivirus protection, and spy ware removal programs. Use the Microsoft automatic updates to keep your operating system safe. Be sure to scan your computer before doing any financial transactions to get rid of any spy ware that could be lurking there.

Knowing how your identity can be stolen is part of the solution. Using common sense and taking action to protect yourself and your family from identity theft makes the identity thieves' job much harder. Share these solutions with your family and friends to help put a stop to this increasingly common crime.

How To Forget About Spam Once And For All

Saturday, April 21, 2007

by: Karl Smith

You will laugh next time you see an unknown email message in your Inbox. This knowledge will help you understand more what spammers and phishers look like.

First suggestion to decrease spam

The best way to decrease or totally eliminate spam from your Inbox is to use a Gmail account. I tested a lot of accounts, such as yahoo mail, msn hotmail, adpost, Outlook express and mailup.

I noticed that Gmail is very good to filter spam, and even though I receive spam all of it ends automatically in the Spam Folder. I do not use any anti spam software. Although I receive even more than hundred emails a day the spam software is useless if you have a Gmail account. You can get it for free from the google website.

If you are receiving spam from the same people over and over again you can report them. If you use Gmail, you can contact the Google Team. You can also create a filter that will automatically delete all messages sent from a specific email address.

Common reasons you receive spam

1. You receive spam because people see your email address. That does not mean you have to keep it Top Secret. It means you must use your email carefully. If possible don't write it down in message boards, forums, groups or classified ads.

Treat your email address as if it is the key of an important door. Do not share it with everyone, or give it freely away to other people whom you do not yet know. Spammers find these email addresses online, anywhere. Then they start sending you messages or even sell your email to other spammers.

I have more than one Gmail account and you can too. If you have many contacts or do business you can just use one account for sending emails and another for something else.

2. Subscriptions to newsletters, ezines or any other subscription may be dangerous. Do not submit your Name and Email to all the subscription boxes you find online.

Some are so interesting that attract a lot of people, maybe cause they are giving away something for free. There are hundreds and thousands of newsletters, and usually they all give some freebie to attract new subscribers.

Use caution, and only subscribe to newsletters and ezines that you are really interested in, not just to receive the freebie. If you just need the freebie a good idea is to create a new Gmail account and name it myfrebbies. Then use that account just for getting freebies.

If the site is looking badly designed, or even some other things that are repelling you, then don't subscribe. The badly designed sites do not have good newsletters neither and they might sell your email or send you spam.

Most dangerous type of spam

Phishing is the most dangerous type of scam. Phishers attempt to fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as passwords and credit card details. These people are simple called Phishers not Spammers.

Phishers send messages trying to make you believe they are huge companies like paypal, ebay, stormpay, HSBC and many others.

You can read the title of your email messages and simple understand they are fake.

Further more these may contain adware or spyware. You should just delete them. Never click the links.

Those sites are fake, and just by clicking on a single fake link from your email message that can harm your PC with spyware or adware.

Ebay, paypal or any other worldwide known company will always email you saying:

Dear your full name or Dear name

Phishers most often do not even say Dear or Hello, or say just Hello Friend. They don't know your real name most often.

Links inside emails can be verified to see if they are fake or real. If you open a message and you think it is phishing place your mouse button without clicking over the URL. It's important not to click. Then simple look at the bottom of your browser.

Are the links the same? Probably not, cause they are fake. Delete message.

You should treat spam as if they are really harmful cause they indeed are. Take care of your email address, cause it is the key to your privacy. The Internet can be very dangerous if you allow it to be. This advice helps makes your online activity safer. Everyone has common sense, and it is important to make use of it when you are on the Internet. If it looks to good to be true, than it is.

Temporary Internet Files

by: Mil Incorporated

Summary: Temporary Internet Files explained. There is also information how to delete temporary internet files and corresponding index.dat files.

What are Temporary Internet Files?

Temporary Internet Files are, in fact, the cache of the Internet Explorer. This means that when you load a web page with Internet Explorer, it is saved on your computer so that if you later decide to open the same page again, it will open a lot faster. Temporary Internet Files improve speed of web browsing and also make possible so called offline browsing, which gives you the ability to open the web pages from cache even when you are not connected to the Internet.

Despite all these positive things about Temporary Internet Files, they have one big drawback: they compromise your privacy. Everyone with access to your computer can look into your Temporary Internet Files folder (location of this folder is discussed here) and see the sites that you have visited in the past. You can manually delete the contents of Temporary Internet Files folder (explained here) but this will not erase all traces of the pages because a special file called Index.dat is placed in this folder and it will still preserve the names and even the dates of your first visits to many pages.

Where is located Temporary Internet Files folder?

The location of the Temporary Internet Files folder depends on the version of Windows and whether or not you are using user profiles.

If you have Windows XP or Windows 2000 then Temporary Internet Files are in this location (note that on your PC they can be on other drive instead of drive C):

C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\

If you have Windows Me, Windows 98, Windows NT or Windows 95 then index.dat files are in these locations:

C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\

C:\Windows\Profiles\\Temporary Internet Files\

Note that on your computer the Windows directory may not be C:\Windows but some other directory. If you don't have Profiles directory in you Windows directory don't worry - this just means that you are not using user profiles.

How to delete Temporary Internet Files?

To delete Temporary Internet Files manually, do the following things:

1. Start Internet Explorer and click Tools menu, then select Internet Options... from this menu. This will open the Internet Options window.

2. Click General tab and then find in the section Temporary Internet Files the button Delete Files... and click it. A new dialog box opens.

3. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the Delete all offline content check box if you want to delete all Web page content that you have made available offline.

4. Click OK to delete the files. Note that if you are doing this for the first time, the deleting can take a large amount of time, so be patient.

WARNING! This will most probably delete all visible items in the Temporary Internet Files folder (except cookies) but a number of invisible traces may remain in the index.dat files. The only way to be sure that you are getting rid of all traces for good is the usage of specialized privacy protection program like Mil Shield - a powerful privacy protection program that was designed specifically to clean and shred the Temporary Internet Files. Additional benefit is the ability to preserve the tracks from some chosen by you sites (selective cleaning), which makes your browsing more comfortable and safe (it is rather suspicious to always have empty history, cookies and Temporary Internet Files - it is better to leave some tracks from "innocent" sites). Mil Shield also cleans all other tracks as index.dat files, cookies, history, cache, AutoComplete records, UserData records, history of recently used folders and documents and many more.

Blog Search - Does Anyone Really Do That?

by: Manny Leger

What do Google Blog Search, Technorati, Blogwise, IceRocket and Blogger all have in common? BLOGS... and lot's of them. People from all walks of life are jumping on the blogging band-wagon these days. And why shouldn't they? It's free of charge in most cases, and anyone can do it. You don't have to be a computer expert to create your own nook on the world wide web anymore.

But with all of these new blogs being created daily, there needs to be a way to consolidate, categorize and locate them. That's where blog search engines and directories come in. The previously mentioned blog search engines are only a drop in the bucket, however. There are many, many others out there. But there is a question among critics going around that needs answering- "Does anyone actually use blog search engines or directories"?

Well, I will answer their question with another question- "Would Google jump into something nobody would use"?

To question the usefullness of blog search is like questioning the usefullness of THE FOOD NETWORK. Just because you don't enjoy cooking does not mean that nobody else does. Is the blogosphere self-driven? Of course! But then again, so is the Food Network, and any other market. So that's not an applicable arguement either.

The claims that blog search engines and directories are useless is propelled by people who don't like the idea of the "average Joe" (or Jane for that matter) being able to have his own virtual web site. These individuals feel less special because grandma now has her own internet address, even though she could not write a line of code to save her life.

When I started my blog directory, I ran into a lot of criticism from people who felt insecure in this way. I received e-mail telling me my blog directory was "worthless", and that "nobody uses blog directories". I am glad I did not let them get to me. Today my directory receives more traffic than I ever could have hoped for, and it is growing every month. I also frequent other blog directories and search engines in support of the blogosphere as well.

Maybe someday the blog search critics will get over themselves, and join in on the wonderful world of blogging. Am I being overly optimistic? Maybe. But then again, who knows?
